Explain John 14:2-6 in connection with what Jesus also said in Luke 17:21

John 14:2-6 and Luke 17:21 are deeply interconnected in their messages about the kingdom of God and Jesus’ role in leading believers to the Father. Let’s examine them together:

John 14:2-6 (ESV)

“In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way? “Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Luke 17:21 (ESV)

“Nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘˜There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”

How Do These Passages Connect?

1. The Kingdom of God is Both Present and Future

 - In Luke 17:21, Jesus declares that the kingdom of God is already among the people, meaning it is present in Him. Wherever Jesus is, the rule and reign of God are manifest.

 - In John 14:2-6, Jesus speaks of preparing a place in His Father’s house, which points to the future fulfillment of God’s kingdom in eternity.

These passages show that the kingdom of God is not just a distant place in the after life but is already inaugurated through Jesus- presence and work on earth.

2. Jesus is the Way to the Kingdom

 - In John 14, Jesus tells His disciples that He is going to prepare a place for them and that He is the way to that place (the Father’s house).

 - In Luke 17, Jesus tells the Pharisees they are looking for the kingdom in the wrong way. Instead of searching for an external, physical kingdom, they need to recognize that Jesus Himself is the King and the kingdom is already present in Him.

Together, these passages clarify that Jesus is the one who brings access to the kingdom-both now (spiritually) and in the future (eternally).

3. Union with Christ Brings Us into the Kingdom

- In John 14, Jesus reassures His disciples that they will be with Him where He is, which is ultimately in the Father’s presence.

- In Luke 17, Jesus shifts the focus from a physical location to a spiritual reality-the kingdom is already within reach through Him.

This means that those who follow Christ already experience the kingdom now, through their relationship with Him, while also awaiting its full realization in eternity.

Both passages highlight that the kingdom of God is not merely a distant place but a present reality in Jesus. John 14:2-6 shows that Jesus is preparing an eternal home for believers, while Luke 17:21 reminds us that the kingdom is already accessible through Him. The key message is that Jesus is the way into this kingdom-both now, through faith, and in the future, in eternal life with the Father.

What is Sovereign Wealth?

Sovereign wealth refers to the financial assets owned and managed by a country’s government, typically through a sovereign wealth fund (SWF). These funds are created using surplus revenues from sources such as natural resource exports (e.g., oil and gas), trade surpluses, foreign exchange reserves, or other state-controlled income.

Key Features of Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs):

Government-Owned: Managed by a national government for long-term economic stability.

Investment Focused: Funds are invested in global assets such as stocks, bonds, real estate, infrastructure, and private equity.

Wealth Preservation & Growth: Designed to stabilize economies, fund development projects, or provide for future generations.

Diversification: Helps reduce reliance on volatile income sources, like oil revenues.

Examples of Sovereign Wealth Funds:

1. Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global- One of the largest SWFs, funded by oil revenues.

2. Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (UAE) - Invests oil wealth globally.

3. China Investment Corporation - Manages China’s foreign exchange reserves.

4. Singapore’s GIC & Temasek Holdings - Focused on long-term economic growth.

SWFs play a major role in global finance by influencing markets, stabilizing economies, and securing national wealth for future generations.

Biblical Context: The Story of Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9)

Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan and grandson of King Saul, had been living in Lo Debar. His story provides powerful lessons of grace, redemption, and restoration.

The Background of Mephibosheth

- Mephibosheth was only five years old when his father Jonathan and grandfather King Saul were killed in battle (2 Samuel 4:4).

- His nurse, in fear, fled with him but accidentally dropped him, causing him to become crippled for life.

- As a crippled descendant of a fallen king, Mephibosheth likely saw himself as worthless, forgotten, and abandoned.

- He lived in Lo Debar, a place of obscurity and lack, which symbolized his spiritual and emotional condition.

David’s Kindness: A Picture of Grace

In 2 Samuel 9:1-13, David asks, “Is there anyone left of the house of Saul, to whom I may show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

- David, remembering his covenant with Jonathan (1 Samuel 20:14-17), sends for Mephibosheth.

- Mephibosheth is brought from Lo Debar to Jerusalem, where David restores his inheritance and invites him to eat at the king’s table as one of his own sons.

- Despite his broken condition, Mephibosheth is given honor, identity, and provision.

This is one of the clearest pictures of God’s grace in the Old Testament.

3. Spiritual Lessons from Lo Debar

A. God’s Grace Can Find You in Your Lo Debar

- Lo Debar represents the dry, broken, and forgotten places in our lives—places of shame, fear, loss, or insignificance.

- Just as David sought out Mephibosheth, God seeks us out, no matter how far or forgotten we feel.

- Psalm 139:7-8 - “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there.”

No one is too lost for God to find and redeem.

B. You Are Not Defined by Your Past or Location

- Mephibosheth saw himself as worthless (- What is your servant, that you should look upon a dead dog such as I?” - “ 2 Samuel 9:8).

- But David saw him as royalty and treated him like a son.

- Likewise, God does not define us by our past, our failures, or where we come from. He defines us by His grace.

Isaiah 62:2 - “You shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name.”

Your past does not determine your future—God does.

C. The King’s Table Covers Your Brokenness

Mephibosheth was crippled, but when he sat at the king’s table, his brokenness was covered-”he looked no different than anyone else.

- This is a picture of how God’s grace covers our imperfections when we accept His invitation to His table.

- Ephesians 2:6 - “And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms.”

God doesn’t just save us - ”He seats us with Him in a place of honor.

4. Application: Are You in Lo Debar?

Many people experience seasons of Lo Debar”a time of loneliness, loss, or feeling forgotten. But Mephibosheth’s story shows that:

1. God hasn’t forgotten you - “ Even when we feel like no one sees us, God remembers His promises (Isaiah 49:15-16).

2. God calls us out of desolation - “ Like David called Mephibosheth, Jesus calls us into relationship with Him (Matthew 11:28).

3. God restores what is lost - “ Mephibosheth received back what belonged to him, and we too receive a new identity in Christ (Joel 2:25).

4. You have a place at the King’s table - “ No matter how broken you feel, God invites you to fellowship with Him.

Final Thought: Jesus, the Greater David

David’s kindness to Mephibosheth is a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ.

David sought out the lost son of his friend Jonathan.

- Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10).

- David invited Mephibosheth to eat at his table as a son.

- Jesus invites us to His eternal banquet (Luke 14:15-24).

Lo Debar is not your final destination. Just as David brought Mephibosheth into his house, Jesus is calling you into His presence, His grace, and His table.
