Carbide lamps are devices that produce light through the chemical reaction between calcium carbide and water, which generates acetylene gas. This gas is then burned at a nozzle to produce a bright flame. These lamps were widely used in the early 20th century, particularly by miners, cavers, and early motorists.
Here's how they work:
1. Calcium carbide (CaC₂) is stored in a chamber in the lamp.
2. Water is stored in a separate compartment and drips onto the carbide at a controlled rate.
3. When water comes into contact with calcium carbide, it reacts to produce acetylene gas (C₂H₂).
4. The gas is released through a nozzle and ignited, producing a bright, white flame.
Carbide lamps were especially popular in mining because they produced a steady, portable light source that was brighter than candles or oil lamps. However, they gradually fell out of use with the development of electric lighting and battery-powered lamps.
Today, they are mostly of historical interest but are still used by some enthusiasts in caving or for demonstration purposes.
